At Dance of Change, we take an integrative holistic approach to counseling. Our therapists use several different types of treatments to help you improve your life. Some of these treatments help you improve your relationship. Others are excellent at treating trauma, anxiety or depression in the individual. Still others can be customized to do both. Many of our treatments are helpful in a group, family or individual setting.
Who We Treat
Whether you are an individual hoping to improve your own mental health and physical well being. Or a part of a new couple or an established couple that’s looking for a holistic approach, we have you covered. Perhaps you are a parent who is struggling or simply dealing with the stresses of extended family, we can help with that too. We love to support families and kids to learn to live more peacefully together. As a well-educated person, you probably already did your homework. Of course, you probably already know what approach will work best for you and your family. You know what your life and your relationship need to move forward. You just need help in how to do it.
Treatments by Category
Let’s take a look at some of the specific treatments we use and how they might work for you and your loved ones. We’ve divided them into four distinct categories to help you think about them. Although, many of the therapies in the same category are very different from each other. That’s why we’ve added links to separate pages for each so you can read more.
Somatic Therapies
SE is a naturalistic approach to treating trauma developed by Dr. Peter Levine. This extremely sophisticated treatment is well supported by research. And it’s one of the first to link stress research across species. It is based upon the observation that wild prey animals, though threatened routinely, are rarely traumatized. Animals in the wild have innate ways of getting rid of the high levels of stress. These instincts provide animals with a built-in “immunity’’ to trauma and stress that we humans can also learn.
EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro as a short-term technique that utilizes bilateral stimulation. Typically, the stimulation happens either through eye movements, tapping or sound in order to resolve trauma symptoms. Both SE & EMDR can result in a number of benefits to you. Relief of traumatic stress symptoms, increased resiliency and improved mood just to name a few. Some people experience greater optimism and more satisfying relationships.
Yoga means union. Union of heart and mind. A joining of mind and body. Body and breath. In the midst of this union we are also joining attention and intention. This 5,000 year old tradition is complex and deep. It is not just a series of exercises. Rather, it is a system of many practices that can be customized to meet individual goals. Some might call it a lifestyle. One of the main goals is optimal health. Another is enlightenment. Whatever goal you start with, yoga is a proven path. It has a ton of research behind it.
Expressive Art Therapies
Creative expression has been a part of healing for centuries. In expressive arts therapy, that arts are used to achieve therapeutic goals . This could range from alleviation anxiety and depression to healing from trauma. The expressive arts therapies have a lot research behind them. Best of all, you don’t need artistic skill to participate. You just need a willingness to try something new.
Expressive Art Therapies include the following:
-
Dance/Movement Therapy
-
Drama Therapy & Psychodrama
-
Art Therapy

Family Therapy
Family therapy is based on the theory of systems. That the one affects the whole. Therefore, family therapists rarely just focus on the individual in a family. They keep the larger picture in mind. It is a very holistic approach. Each of us have both an internal family system as well as an external family system.
Psychodynamic Therapy
This is a classic type of therapy that some call modern-day psychoanalysis. Another word may be depth psychology or psychodynamic therapy (PT). There are many approaches within this broad category. And also a lot of research behind this evidence-based approach. Also, it can he easily integrated with other holistic approaches.
