Integrative
We take an integrative approach that’s base Inter-personal Neuro-biology (IPNB) and expressive art therapies. IPNB merges the ground-breaking findings in many of many science fields including psychology, biology, anthropology and others into a cohesive model for healing. This approach is also grounded in systems thinking, attachment, and the polyvagal theory. To learn more about this emerging field, you can hear one of its founders, Dan Siegel talk about it here. To learn about some of the other aspects of our integrative approach, please read on.
Creative
Here at Dance of Change we like to take this integrative approach one step further by also adding the arts. Creative expression is important whether or not you identify yourself as a creative person. The healing benefits of the creative art therapies or expressive art therapies are well established in research literature. The field of expressive art therapy is an integrative approach that seeks to combine two or more creative art therapies in the service of healing.
The creative art therapies include art therapy, dance/movement therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, and poetry therapy. Whether you are a child experiencing anxiety or depression, a teen or young adult who is struggling with issues of identity, or a neurodiverse individual whose brain and body simply works differently, or a creative adult, we’ve got you covered. Through our tailored approach, we develop a plan and a path for healing that’s as unique as you are.
Relational
We are inter-personal in our approach. This means everything we do takes into account relationship. Often this includes both the relationship to oneself (intra-personal) as well as the relationship to others (interpersonal), but also how those two aspect play and interact together. This is what we call the dance. We believe dance is a great metaphor to describe the complex interplay of needs, feelings, behaviors, beliefs and expectations that are a part of any relationship. In the inter-personal realm we are informed by Internal family systems (IFS) as well as the approach called Psychosynthesis. To learn more about relationships between two or more people please see more about each unique family system below.
Families
Every family needs support in order to function well together. So whether you are a parent who is struggling, have a kid who is struggling or are needing help dealing with difficult problems from the extended family, we get it. When it comes to working with families, we are informed by several family systems approaches including strategic family therapy and the workings of Virginia Satir.
Couples
We know that couples require a different set of skills and support than families or individuals. Whether you are a well-established couple looking needing to fine tune your communication or a new couple ready to make a deeper commitment to each other. We know what it takes to make a marriage work. We have been trained in the developmental model through the couples Institute and also the psychobiological approach to couples therapy (PACT).
Trauma-Informed
It’s well established that effects of trauma can be devastating . Fortunately, you can prevent or even reverse these effects. Trauma can be defined as any overwhelming life experience(s) that leaves a lasting imprint on your body, heart and mind. These effects can last a life time. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to happen. Neuroscience affirms that the integration of the brain and the body is essential for healing many types of trauma. A somatic, body based approach is key. We are informed by several approaches to trauma healing including Somatic Experiencing, EMDR and yoga.
